Safety and Accountability

Lil Lab Policies: 

Lil Labs must be compliant with all local, state/regional, national, and international policies. 

Lil Lab Safety: 

• If your Lil Lab may generate waste, ensure waste containment and disposal aligned with local, state, and federal laws 

• Complete and publish/share with us, a risk assessment prior to launching the Lil Lab and with any new additions to the Lil Lab

• Fix anything that is (unintentionally) broken/on in your Lil Lab promptly

• Lil Labs cannot contain live vertebrates 

• All containers must be labelled with what they contain, especially chemicals 

• Generally avoid chemicals beyond those generally recognized as safe (GRAS) 

  • If you do have potentially dangerous chemicals which comply with safety laws of your locality, ensure clear labels detailing how they can cause harm and how to adequately dispose of them. In addition, ensure that any dangerous chemicals take into account the rights and responsibilities of children and others who have access to these materials, or limit such access.

  • No excessive use of contaminants that might damage local flora and fauna or provide a risk to human health.

  • Sharing with us the labels and exact wording you would put on the substances you are giving out

Lil Lab Community Accountability: 

• Complete an annual community update for the Lil Lab Network:

  • Questionnaire: 

    • What are your biggest successes/wins this year?

    • What difficulties/challenges have you faced?  

    • What feedback have you gotten from the community? How have you responded to it? 

    • Have you made any major changes to your Lil Lab this year? What were they and why? 

    • Please reassess the risks of your Lil Lab. Do you see any safety concerns that need immediate fix? Do you see any that are minor concerns? What are you plans to address them? 

    • What feedback (in the form of qualitative or quantitative data) have you collected on the impact of your Lil Lab? 

    • If you are giving out items, what needs to be stocked the most? 

    • How can we support you, if at all, with your Lil Lab? 

• If your Lil Lab is collecting data, fill out a data use agreement in order to ensure responsible use of data. 

  • Lil Labs should not collect any personally identifying information 

• Ensure that you are not spreading misinformation and provide citations wherever possible in materials distributed through the Lil Lab.
